X/Y Class Capacitors

EMI/ RFI Interference suppression capacitors are used to filter out any noise or high voltage spikes that can cause damage to a circuit device. There are two classes of interference suppression capacitors, Class X and Y.

X class capacitors are capacitors that are connected line to line and in the event of failure of the capacitor the potential for electrical shock is not present.  Y capacitors on the other hand are connected from line to ground.
